The Sound of Winter Beginning

3. Bushmills1

A fragment from an Irish air,
hugging its knees, perched in a chair,
before the fireplace to-and-fros,
asking me, why not raise a toast?

This fragment from an Irish air
consists of nothing but a pair
of opening notes, but now, behold,
into my glass it splashes gold.

Besides the first notes of that air,
and the black log there on the fire,
to toast there isn’t anyone
what inside me is dead and gone.

And so, what would you have me toast—
the Russian muse, that voice I’ve lost?
And how to understand, alone,
why it should terrify me so
to get that ringing telephone?

1. A high-end brand of Irish whisky.

The Sound of Winter Beginning

Not the shades of evening,
but their very shade,
managed to remove it,
this cold-blooded day.

Stolen from Fet’s poetry,
that soft stuff is now
trampled down like toffee
into sidewalk snow.

Something wants to get me,
from outside my lair,
word or bird, it might be,
in the vacant air.

It’s as if some woozy
Russian, who knows who,
wants to be a bluejay
flitting past my view.

The Sound of Winter Beginning

1

No traffic at this sort of hour.
But still it seems for evermore
my tired old Mazda’s been held tight
by this red light,
after she made it up the hill.
There’s blood-red ice and blood-red snow.
Go for it? That’s your licence blown.

...Pushkin is right, say what you will,
winter is no bad thing, he thinks—
no dust, no stinks,
no bugs, and no mosquitoes, nil.

God damn it, though! Time I got home!
But this red light on this hill top
is stuck at ‘stop’.
