‘As I Said, I’m Getting on for Three Thousand…’

My seventh decade here in this world as given.
During my time, out there on public squares
people have been strung up—the bad guys, fair
enough, but some among them have been infants!

Here stands a cinema, and right here they depend,
swaying, and meanwhile from the crowd comes laughter.
That’s all there is re childhood and safe shelter.
Your cherry orchard, grandson of the Reds.

Another memory — three folk-hero youths,
their jackboots menacing a whippersnapper,
who writhes and whines, “Fellas, you’ve got it backwards!
What’s this about, what’s up, I’m not a Jew!”

He’s not a Jew? Let’s shake him down and see.
Two pounds of flour doled out per pair of hands, and
the whole night through troglodyte ancient ladies
waiting for opening time at groceries.

A sort of world in which I sort of lived,
my sack of flour ground by a Chaldean millstone,
my nose assaulted by burned lowgrade lard,
and unwashed armpits, Komsomol tradition.

I sort of lived. Ate, drank, and strolled, no bother —
then in a narrow alley met a Sphinx,
with steel teeth glittering through granite lips.
His riddle started with the words ‘You mother…’.

The way the answer started was ‘Oho!’ —
and from those eyes immediately cascaded
bright sparkling stars with long-extended tails, and
one of them showed me which way I should go.

In Memory of Volodia

You’re dead—but us, we’re still slaving.
A miss, though, ’s as good as a mile is.
You used to sleep under a living
blanket of purring felines.

Whatever compurred in the nighttime,
next day you’d set down on paper.
After the lowbrow lowlifes
had upped and left that pigsty.

Second nature to you—giving bounty
to plants, to children, to canines.
When the lowlifes had found a bolthole
behind the entryway trashcans.

For a poet it’s not easy, existing
in the land of cudgel and saw-edge.
And the cats can’t sleep; they fidget
as they wait for his next visit,
the source of that vital warmness.

Translator's note: An elegy for Vladimir Iosifovich Ufliand (1937-2007), poet and graphic artist, one of Lev Loseff’s close literary friends in Leningrad. Loseff first dedicated a poem to him in 1962 (see http://ufland.narod.ru/s08textuflandu.htm), and then, in the USA, edited his first published collection (Тексты 56-77, Ann Arbor: Ardis, 1978). Ufliand’s poetry began to be published in Russia only after 1991, with
