Photography Lesson. 1

Here’s another. What are you crying for, you fool?
Look at the picture through your cupped palm
and you’ll see two backs
separate from the wall,
and acquire the capacity of a form.
A smile uncovers the mouths,
and a hand reaches forward,
and two jackets, two shirts,
two heads don’t realize
that they’re long dead.
There, that heap of coats and hats,
underexposed, like a white mouse
(apparently the developer was weak),
look closely, -- that’s you there.

I’m standing, leaning against the wall,
underexposed and tipsy,
and look: the future threatens me
with an angular fist.

The Stump Garden /

The Stump Garden

The cleanpicked skeleton of a sailor,
slammed down in crooked disarrangement—
fifty years now
this hold has held him as his household;
the little fish swim through his eyeholes,
and look aloft.

Shit filters into lagoon sewer,
moon moulders over Honolulu.
Columns of fire
and blood that in this place ascended,
into hotels have cooled and blended,
and stand in file.

Memorial plinths that ply for profit,
inside, shrill splashy glitter, profligate
chew, swill, and shriek;
the sun-browned buttocks of the bimbos
bump-bump; in every branch of business
the price is steep.

Dark aperture between two columns
(maybe this same infernal bolthole
they aimed to ram?).
There is a smell of served-up seafood
in this odd place. And there is really
a restaurant,

where capable Japanese digits
fashion the sushi and sashimi.
Wiser than us,
threefold he’s upped his capital, and
to please his customers installed a
garden of stumps.

These charbroiled stumps in their grey sandpan
have been arranged in such a manner
that every stump
a shadow casts of sad forbearance,
a shadow of tectonic radiance
at that last trump.

That dreadful day of death and glory!
Lava began to flow, engorging,
then settled down.
It flowed, engulfing things, that lava,
but some of them remained thereafter,
not burned, not drowned.

The objects that we fail to render
and burn, are what we call remembrance.
Crouch down and view—
no tears, but neither mocking laughter—
view charred stumps bobbing in the water,
and those stumps too.

That’s how the world has been divided:
our victory, Japan’s survival.
To live’s their fate.
Into the smiling Nippon maw they’ll
insert another raw fish morsel,
and masticate.
