June 1972 /

From the book Sisyphus Redux (2000)

June 1972

Sticks cooling to embers, carrots downgrated.
Our mob-scene get-togethers dying the death.
In the countryside, forest and peat conflagration.
Nothing to breathe.

People said the heat was from sunflares
and CIA dirty tricks with ozone holes;
intellectuals said it was from bumfluff
like Brezhnev & co.

Placenta-like, people plopping out of the station,
kopeck coins stuck in purse-mouth ick,
then wandering on to where ice-cream ladies
had left a sweet pool of milk.

What to do in a country whose genius has departed?
Along with the stump of the crowd, elbow
your way into one of those red tramcars
with seats where bugs crawl.

Activity of sun. Passivity of nation.
Mutating bugs. And coppers in their grey
uniforms glued to their radio.
Period of stagnation. Heatwave.

Sisyphus Redux (2000)
